back to black (and white)

enuff colour.. back to black and white. adjusted the contrast and brightness a bit though. was a cloudy day, no strong sunlight. notice puay yong is not in the centre of the pic, she's at the bottom third. like that way her paddles stand out, with the white decals.

i first set eyes on her the 1st day we reached darwin. i didnt think abt her after that, figuring that some one better would come along the next few days. but that brief attraction lingered in my mind the next few days. everytime the wind blew, she wispered her name in my ear. everytime i saw couples at the beach, my mind wandered back to her. O, the joy! when i finally went back, and there she was waiting patiently for me.

ever since we came back from darwin, she has been standing guard in my room, never complaining, silently, meekly, waiting for me...

pink dolphins

today's training was wierd..... i suddenly was gripped in the throes of a phobia.. i was sooooo scared i couldnt breathe.
even simple things like staying underwater for 10 secs cause my body to scream out for air and i juz have to surface, gulping mouthfuls of sweet evening air. i dunno y, i juz start to panic when i have to dive underwater to pick up a mannikin or even juz to swim under the obstacles.. i juz have to get over this... i mean, other trgs im totally fine, then todae i juz start to sieze up.. seeing the wall looming ahead during 尊严, i can feel the tendrils of fear snaking out and start to claw into my mind, as if they want to pull me into a dark abyss... okok, i noe its very 夸张 , but thats wat a phobia feels like!

*尊严/rescue medly - swim 50m, dive underwater 17.5m without surfacing, pick up mannikin and swim the rest of the 37.5m *

i have this hypothesis on the sudden emergence of the 'phobia'. yesterday nite, i was watching discovery channel and they had a feature on dolphins and y they attack ppl. maybe thats the reason, im subconciously fearful of pink dolphins lurking under the waters of the NUS pool, waiting to attack me! squeak-- roar!

i managed to unearth some pictures i took for a video last year... abt tzuqun playing a lonely JC gal in the video.. hahahahahahaha... the black and white makes her seem sad and her world is without colour.. it was sooooo fun taking the photos... but she will most proby KILL me if she sees that i put her picture here.. lol... her bf alvin may come and whack me oso.. hehe.. but i dun care!

scenes were taken at ACJC. the pool shot on the left is nicer in colour.. maybe next time.

if u look at the top picture, the subject (tzuqun) is not in the centre of the pic. of to the left with her looking to the right, muz leave some space for her eyes to look at.. and the lines on the track sorta pulls the viewers attention to the right, to where she is looking at.. so yah, 2 pts, avoid putting ur subject smack in the centre of the pic, and always leave more space in the direction of where the person is looking at. o, make sure ur frame dun truncate the person (cut him off), i left some space on the left of her and the top of her head.

depth of field

o.......... this picture makes me go all fuzzy...... zZzZzZzZzZ...
an example of depth of field. the centre (where the focus was) is sharp, while the rest of the frame is all blurred. this is achieved using a marco lens (short focal length) and manual focussing..
very similar to ur physics experiment in abt the pinhole camera.. larger aperture, more light goes in, more overlapping of images.. hence the blurring. if u have a smaller aperture (hole for light to go thru), u only get one image froming on ur 'film', resulting in one sharp image

potraits

well, decided to include some basic photo composition tips in my blog... not say that i am a good photographer or that i take good photos, but hope ppl can pick up some basic skills (so that when ppl help me take photos of me, it wont be all weird and all.. haha)

i'll start of with simple (but constantly overlooked) stuff : frame orientation.
the pic below is in potrait orientation. the other (very commonly used orientation is landscape)

alot of ppl ALWAYS use landscape... as u can tell from my past posts, i kinda have a moderate dislike of landscape... then u ask , wat can the potrait orientation be used for?? the obvious answer is: TO TAKE POTRAITS OF PPL !!! DUH! (the name suggest ppl should take shots of ppl in this orientation mah, but all lazy to tilt the camera)... the difference with a potrait shot is it can capture more of a person in a shot. because we are built vertically more than horizontally, by taking potrait, the person will occupy a greater % of space of the frame (head to abt mid torso usually?) ... as compared to landscape, u only get the face, leaving alot of free space (= more backgrd clutter).. again, not say that i am a pro / zai kia, but i think ppl should experiment more with potrait orientation rather that holding the camera so that u can read the words on the menu rite while u take a picture.

next up will be abt usage of space in a frame.... and how to 'frame' ur shots with space.. eheh... sounds cheem.. lol

*this was taken in the early morning, watching sunrise in darwin... the "models" look energetic, but actually all 4 bei nuah from the lack of slp :)

fireworks

well, here are 2 fireworks shots taken seperately (both in potrait). one was taken during NDP last year while the one on the right was taken at arafura closing ceremony.... the one on the right is more "magnificant", but the one of the left brings out more 气氛... its cos i think fireworks cannot be taken alone... has to be taken with part of the event to bring out its spectacle and how it lends excitement to the event... well, for u to compare which one evokes more "feeling".. (o, and fireworks should never be in black and white.. y hide all the nice colours???)*one last shot of a landscape fireworks...
